When people who don’t know pick up my book If You Come Softly, or Brown Girl Dreaming, people often say “But I thought this was for young people?” And I’ve seen Another Brooklyn in 7th grade classrooms, so go figure. In this time of people 'not having a whole lot of time to read,' I wished they’d pick up picture books! There are some phenomenal ones out there. I think all books are for anyone who needs them. That said, it doesn’t mean that some books are for young adults and some for adults. With 'adult' literature, I can move all over the place in time. With 'young adult' literature, I try to stay within a certain period of time-usually a year or so in the life of my protagonist. Read at the Bone is a compelling story that is so beautifully written by Jacqueline Woodson. However, that grand event was not without any poignancy. It was the evening of the coming of age ceremony of 16 years old Melody in the Brooklyn brownstone of her grandparents. The story in this novel opened up in 2001. The same was the case in the list of that child as well. It beautifully uncovered the considerable role that the community and history have played in the decisions, experiences, and all of the relationships of these two families. Moving backward and forward in time, with all the poetry and power along with the emotional richness, this extraordinary novel uncovered something big. There were a couple of families from distinct social classes who joined together through an unexpected kind of pregnancy and the kid that it produced. You will love the way you see each character given with a definite sense. All of them performed well and it will hard to pick who did better than the other. The audio narration of Red at the Bone novel is done by Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Bahni Turpin, Shayna Small, and Jacqueline Woodson herself. Another Brooklyn is one more fantastic novel that Jacqueline Woodson has written. Brown Girl Dreaming is a Newbery Honor-winning title by the author.
